Empty bowls  - Tyhjä kulho Helsinki 2018 for Unicef.

Empty Bowls Helsinki event is an annual event that takes place at the atmospheric Crypt of the Helsinki Dome. The 2018 Empty Bowls Helsinki takes place on Saturday, September 15.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. It was started 1990 in Michigan, USA, by art teachers Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom. Empty Bowls is a happy lunch event that is established through donations given by potters and other craftspeople who make beautiful handcrafted bowls, restaurants that donate delicious soups and bread. Musical entertainment is also donated to the event by exceptional artists.

This year we are honored to have (among the many
 other great artists) a mini-concert by Iiro Rantala.

In exchange for a cash donation (minimum 25 €) visitors are given a handmade bowl to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In addition, visitors are invited to enjoy a soup lunch and entertainment in the beautiful Crypt of the Helsinki Dome.

You will be served fantastic soups donated by the best restaurant in Helsinki!

Empty Bowls Helsinki’s donations go to the Finnish UNICEF emergency fund, which uses the money to build and renovate wells, water pipes, pumps, and dry toilets, and to teach children in poor countries the basics of hygiene. Work is done in over 90 worst-off countries.

Finland’s first ever Empty Bowls event took place in 2003 in Helsinki. When I gathered a group of friends to arrange the Empty Bowls day as a celebration of my  10-year-anniversary as a ceramic artist at   UDUMBARA. 

From 2006 on the Empty Bowls Helsinki has been a part of the Helsinki Design Week and since 2015 it has been organized by Tuula Styrman and many volunteers from Unicef Helsinki  

Udumbara donates 100 local clay bowls for the event, this year they where decorated by the artist from Patternsfrom Agency

Polttarit, Synttärit & Juhlat Udumbarassa studiossa.

Keramiikkapaja on hauska vaihtoehto juhlille. Udumbaran studiossa voi jokainen kokeilla onneaan dreijan äärellä. Kokenut keraamikko (Eva Spoof) ohjaajana pitää huolen, että kaikki onnistuvat ja tapahtumasta jää muistoksi oma itse muotoiltu kukkaruukku. 

Aikuiset ja lapset (vanhempien seurassa) ovat Udumbaraan tervetulleita. 

Studio sijaitsee Helsingin Kalliossa, keskeisellä paikalla Sauna Arlan vieressä ja  lähistöllä on monia hyviä muitakin jatkopaikkoja, ravintoloita sekä baareja.

Helsinki Day 2017: Painting Empty Bowls for Unicef

Empty Bowls Helsinki event is an annual HDW event that takes place at the atmospheric Crypt of the Helsinki Dome. The 2017 Empty Bowls Helsinki takes place on Saturday, September 16. Welcome: 

11 & 12 of June at  Helsinki Day celebrations we painted with new Helsinki residents 100 bowls blue and white (they are made from local Kultela clay) to celebrate 100-year-old independent Finland. 

The bowls will be donated for Empty Bowls Helsinki and also used in Helsinki Design weeks gala.

Stray saucers

Porcelain saucers get my sympathy at Flea Markets. They were once someone's precious possessions. Remainders for what a wonderful industry we had in Helsinki.  Arabia fine china. Before  WWII it was the largest porcelain factory in Europe. But like all the good Saga's, it too came to its end.  

RIP Arabia, made in Finland 1873-2016.

My mother was an Arabia factory guide. She loved her job.  I grew up visiting the factory, hearing so many stories from Arabia's history. I guess that's why I am a ceramist now.

In the early 2000s, me, Mom "Bigi", my sister Annika & her daughter Taika.

I  like to use stray saucers like the grannies use to use them...under the flowerpots. I love the miss match they make with my pots. Rustic wild clay terracotta pot, paring with elegant, delicate china.
