Stray saucers

Porcelain saucers get my sympathy at Flea Markets. They were once someone's precious possessions. Remainders for what a wonderful industry we had in Helsinki.  Arabia fine china. Before  WWII it was the largest porcelain factory in Europe. But like all the good Saga's, it too came to its end.

My mother was an Arabia factory guide. She loved her job.  I grew up visiting the factory, hearing so many stories from Arabia's history. I guess that's why I am a ceramist now.

I  like to use stray saucers like the grannies use to use them...under the flowerpots. I love the miss match they make with my pots. Rustic wild clay terracotta pot, paring with elegant, delicate china.

the name

UDUMBARA the name.

The Udumbara flower, or “an auspicious flower from heaven” in Sanskrit.

The time I started the pottery (1994) and for many years I was a practicing Buddhist. 

UDUMBARA name comes from Buddhism, plainly it means no sorrow. The name is a memory for the quest to live an authentic life...finding the way for true self is not easy, not for anyone. 

Thich Nhat Hanh places the flower in the context of enlightenment. 

To see a fully awakened person, a Buddha, is so rare that it is like seeing an udumbara flower. In the Tu Hieu Monastery in Hue, there is a scroll which says: "The udumbara flower, although fallen from the stem, is still fragrant." Just as the fragrance of the udumbara flower cannot be destroyed, our capacity for enlightenment is always present. The Buddha taught that everyone is a Buddha, everyone is an udumbara flower.

Helsinki's Unicef is organizing "TYHJÄ KULHO 2016" Empty Bowls Brunch.

Getting ready to do my contribution:

Since last year I have been donating  for them wildclay terracotta flowerpots instead of bowls.  I think they are more useful for many quest who have join us many times already...They have too many bowls already, but you can never have too many flowerpots! 

Empty Bowls Helsinki´s donations go to the Finnish UNICEF, which uses ithe money to build and renovate wells, water pipes, pumps and dry toilets, and to teach children in poor countries the basics of hygiene. Work is done in over 90 worst-off countries.

Vallisaari Island is enchanting destination for outings, netx to the Suomenlinna/Sveaborg  (UNESCO World Heritage Site), just 20 minutes by boat from the Market square in Helsinki.

Sauerkraut/Kimchi jar

I started UDUMBARA and making kitchenware pottery in 1994. My first product was a stoneware sauerkraut/kimchi jar for “city” gourmet people. You could easily disinfect it in the oven and it fitted in a refrigerator.

In my youth I lived  in Massachusetts and got acquainted with with Shaker movements minimalism and simplicity of their beautiful everyday objects at Hancock Shaker Village. Their functional aspect has inspired me while creating the small scale series for Udumbara.

After attending  Somero II International Ceramic seminar in Kultela Brick Factory in 1999.

I got to know the owner and master of the brick factory in Kultela, Arvo Kankare.  

There I got my first touch and passion for the beautiful but demanding  Finnish wild clay  and with Arvos guidance started to make functional products with it.

Inventing the bag-in-box wine cooler took me all away to China where I worked in ceramic project in periods in Yixing, Dingshu town (In 2004 - 2006 )

Here is a photo of one of my best moments in Dingshu: The men at the factory could not believe that I can throw clay. They where astonished when I showed them my throwing. The women in the factory cheered me with laughter and this was how I earned the respect from the men.

After seeing all the factories there and the pollution there. I felt that there was no longer reason or demand for the way I was still doing pottery in Finland and started to work at Helsinki Airport.

Luckily I have found back my passion for pottery. Now I exclusively work with Finnish wild clay. I love making simple wildclay terracotta flowerpots and bit modernised versions of Nordic rustic kitchenware.  

A fashion brand Samuji home collection carries Udumbara made wildclay flowerpots. and I am happy that they have been selling well.

The wild clay has it’s own temperamental nature that needs patience when working but I enjoys the rewarding results that are lively and tactile. The material is very delicate and her bigger objects will require months of ageing of the clay before firing. The material gives the products a wonderfully rich earthy character.

By choosing this raw material I want to emphasize the unique value of local natural clay. Finnish natural clay is warm, homely and above all an ecological choice, because as a natural raw material it does not require complex processing and it is fired to a ready product at a low temperature.

I love this photo by Heli Blåfield , you can really feel in it the earth connection of a wildclay teacup.

I got get acquainted with tea ceremony in Yixing and currently I am focusing on tea ceremony and creating tea ceremony sets with a Nordic twist. Thanks to the Kultela clay's porous nature and its rich iron and other mineral content, tea brewed in wild clay pot a develops a richer flavor.

UDUMBARA - Artist statement in Finnish

Kuva; Nelli Kivistö Olen vuodesta 1994 asti suunnitellut ja valmistanut keittiön käyttö keramiikkaa (UDUMBARA). Asuin nuorena Yhdysvalloissa ja Massachusetts´ssa, tutustuin Shaker-arkkitehtuuriin ja heidän käytännöllisiin sekä kauniisiin käyttöesineisiin. Olen pitänyt heidän yksinkertaista arkkitehtuuria ja funktionaalista käyttöesine filosofiaansa pienimuotoisen tuotantoni esikuvana.  V. 1999 järjestettiin Suomessa, Someron II kansainvälinen keramiikka seminaari,  se pidettiin Kultelan Tiilitehtaalla. Tutustuin siellä Kultelan isäntään Arvo Kankareeseen ja ensimmäistä kertaa suomalaiseen luonnonsaveen. Innostuin seminaarissa suuresti tästä haastavasta raaka-aineesta. Seminaarin jälkeen Arvon materiaalin käyttöohjeistuksella aloin kokeilemaan tätä raaka-ainetta käyttöesineissä. v.2004-2006  työskentelin periodeja keramiikkaprojektissani Kiinassa Yixingissä, Dingshu kaupungissa. Sieltä palattuani ja nähtyäni Kiinan massiiviset keramiikka tuotannot koin keramiikan teon Suomessa melko turhaksi ja harkitsin ammatinvaihtoa.  Löysin kuiten uuden innostuksen alaan siirtymällä kokonaan Kultelan tiilitehtaan luonnonsaveen. Tämä materiaali luo astioihin ihanan rehevän maanläheisen luonteen. Kutsun Kultelan savea nimellä “villisavi”, sillä muuten se yleisesti sekoitetaan teolliseen/ulkolaisiin saveen. Se on käännös englanninkielisestä sanasta ”wild clay”. Raaka-aine valinnalla haluan korostaa paikallisen luonnonsaven arvoa.  Suomalainen luonnonsavi on lämminhenkinen, kodikas ja ennenkaikkea ekologinen valinta, sillä se ei raaka-aineena vaadi monimutkaista prosessointia  ja se poltetaan matalassa lämpötilassa valmiiksi tuotteeksi.  Ilokseni yhteistyö muotibrändi SAMUJI:iin kanssa on lisännyt kiinnostusta työtäni kohtaan ja Samuji home collectionille valmistamani kukkaruukut ovat käyneet mukavasti kaupan.  Kuva : Nina Skogster Kiinassa tutustuin teeseremoniaan ja Udumbarassa on kehitteillä teeseremonia-astioita pohjoisella särmällä. Seremonia astioissa luonnonsavi (maa) pääsee mielestäni ansaitsemaansa ainutlaatuiseen arvoonsa. Kultelan savi sopii ominaisuuksiltaan oikein poltettuna erinomaisesti teeseremonia-astioiksi. Kiitos sen huokoisuuden  ja luonnollisen runsaan mineraalipitoisuuden, tee siinä haudutettuna kehittää rikkaamman maun (Thanks to the clay's porous nature and its rich mineral content, tea brewed in  wildclay pot  develops  richer flavor).  Villisavi on oikukkaampi kuin teollisesti sekoitettu savi, minkä takia sitä ei juurikaan käytetä enää keramiikkatuotannossa. Se vaatii kärsivällisyyttä mutta lopputulos palkitsee ainutlaatuisella elävyydellään ja tunnollan. Se on erityisen herkkä poltossa ja lisäksi teepannun valmistaminen vaatii onnistuakseen useiden kuukausien iästämisaikaa. Kuva: Nina Skogster Teeseremonia-tuotesuunnitteluprojektissa on mukana neuvonantajina sekä koti- että ulkomaisia teeseremonian asiantuntijoita. Valmistan heille astioita koekäyttöön. Heidän ohjeistuksen mukaan teen parannettuja versioita, kunnes täytän odotukset korkealaatuisten  seremonia-astioiden tuottamisesta. Tämä prosessi on pitkä. Teen suunnittelutyötä UDUMBARA-pajalla Helsingissä (www.udumbara.fi). Työn etenemistä voi myös seurata sosiaalisessa mediassa mm. Facebookissa, Instragramista ja Pericope Appsilla (udumbara_helsinki).
